More about Diamonds - Diamond Cut
The cut of a diamond can either enhance or distract from the stone’s natural brilliance. A beautiful cut will release the stone’s radiance and enable light to dance around the stone. It will also limit the imperfections visible in the stone and magnify its beauty.
The cut is the only control a jeweller has over the quality of a stone. Elements that contribute to the quality of a diamond’s cut include; uniformity of all facets, a rounded finish and the right depth and width of each cut. If a cut is too shallow, light will escape through the bottom of the diamond; whereas if a cut is too deep, light will leak through the sides. In both instances the diamond will appear dark and unclear. The ideal cut must direct light throughout the stone and act as a mirror in reflecting an assortment of colour.
Another element to consider when analysing a diamond’s cut is the shape the diamond is. Diamonds may be cut to form a; Round Brilliant, Round Single, Princess, Heart, Emerald, Baguette, Marquise, Oval, Pear, Radiant or Triangle.
